Compilation of singer’s EPs shows eclectic style choices and fondness for phat beats.

Epilation, thank Christ, is not another standard handful of songs churned out by some delicate, personality-lacking female singer/songwriter. Are we past that yet? A few more days? Phew… but what we do have is the compilation of Tara Simmons’ Pendulum and All The Amendment’s EPs, which shows a greater attention to detail and maturity than most of the stuff spewing forth from the genre right now. Dense vocal harmonies, a plethora of instruments at her disposal and quirky arrangements all warrant repeated listenings of the album. Rat could almost be considered trip-hop, while Trip Over’s piano evokes innocence and childhood lost to the inevitability of time. Even the dangerous dull-jazz territory of Pendulum is propped up by some punchy drums and a Clarinet solo that’s more freak-out than Kenny G. If Missy Higgins is the Sound Of White (very, VERY white), then Tara Simmons is the Sound Of Red, whether it be wine, roses or blood being spilt.

I have a new video which the director of All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane decided to shoot as part of their marketing plan for the film. Margaret and David gave it three and a half stars on their show last week, a pretty bloody good effort considering how tough to impress the pair are.

There is more info about the film at allmyfriendsmovie.com and it is currently showing in cinemas around Australia.

Have a look!

Also, my song Break The Rules For Me was aired on Triple J the other night making it the fifth song of mine they have played. I think we are darn lucky to have a radio station in Australia that fills the gap between commercial and community radio, giving support to local and independent artists in front of a national audience. It also makes me happy to know they are willing to re-visit my stuff from time to time.

Recently Nic Harcourt, a man very well known as a taste-maker in the US music industry, played my song Break The Rules For Me in his program on LA Radio Station KCRW.
You bloody ripper! Nic - if you don’t mind, I think you should play me again.

On Monday the 24th of September I was lucky enough to take part in ‘Songs of Applewood’ at Magoo and Tylea’s property. The weekend was put together by APRA and Black Box Studio’s Magoo and Jeff Lovejoy and the idea was to put a bunch of Brisbane songwriters together, pair them up and make them write a song and record it by the end of the day.

Well.. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it until Monday, but I’m certainly glad to have at least gotten one day in. I was paired with Guy Webster and we wrote and co-produced a track together before heading into record and produce it further. We were given the opportunity to work with Magoo; ARIA award winner for producing Regurgitator’s Unit, and most recently producer of albums by Kate Miller-Heidke and Operator Please. The result was awesome and I thank Tylea and Magoo so much for having a bunch of loud mouth (and at times drunk) musicians raid their property over the weekend!

I also recently returned from tour to Melbourne and I thank everyone who came to show their support at those gigs. Also, just before heading down, I had the brand new pressing of my release EPilation arrive. It’s a compilation of the two EP’s I have launched over the year and it looks amazing! - so many thanks go to Dane, Tarin and Ricks for putting it together for me. The Launch of EPilation will be taking place at The Troubadour (Brisbane) on the 25th of October. The release will be available to buy from this site very soon as well.

Next week is a busy one with a showcase spot in the Big Sound Music Conference on Wednesday night and then It’s off to Sydney to play the opening support for Kate Miller-Heidke at the Oxford Art Factory on Friday night.

Meanwhile, I am also working my little butt off completing the arrangements for my performance with Topology at the Powerhouse in November, so I am well and truly busy at the moment!

I look forward to seeing you at some future gigs!
