Aftermath.

A couple of a weeks ago I headed to Sydney to play a show at the Vanguard. While I was down I joined Andy Bull and Hungry Kids Of Hungary on stage at The Metro. Someone uploaded this little video from the night and I thought I’d share it round. I think as far as fan footage goes, it’s a bit of alright.

Also, this Saturday night is a new festival running at the Old Museum called Track & Field. It has lots of brilliant local bands including the Last Dinosaurs, Ball Park Music, The Belligerents and Mitzi as well as DJ sets from Hungry Kids of Hungary, The John Steel Singers and The Honey Month. I think we’re a bit starved for great local music events and I think this is the start of something really special for Brisbane. Come along and check it out if you can! You can find more info here.

Album Number Two

This week I headed back to the studio to begin the recording of my next album. The studio we’ve been tracking at is called The Recording Oasis in Tallebudgera Valley, just near Currumbin. It is such an incredible place, with a Steinway grand, Hammond C3 running through a Leslie speaker and a Rhodes, plus plenty of other vintage gear and instruments. It also has it’s own accommodation, a great in-house engineer by the name of Jake Welsh and a 25 metre lap pool with a flying fox over the top of it which I’ve managed to sprain my ankle on because I’m a bit of an imbicile.

During the writing of this album I was really inspired by the sound on albums such as El Perro Del Mar’s Love Is Not Pop and Lykke Li’s Youth Novels. Having access to all these instrument and equipment is a dream come true as far as how I envisage the outcome of the songs I have written. We’ve tracked all the drums, percussion and bass and now we’re working on the vocals, synths, organs, keys and guitars. At the end of the week we move the rest of the process to Yanto Browning’s studio who is the producer of this record.

I’m pretty crap at waiting for stuff like this to be complete so hopefully it won’t take too long before I can start to show and tell but we are predicting a release around August at this point in time.

Chris, who drums for me took some photographs while we were tracking so I thought it would be nice to share some.

Applewood, EPilation and Topology

On Monday the 24th of September I was lucky enough to take part in ‘Songs of Applewood’ at Magoo and Tylea’s property. The weekend was put together by APRA and Black Box Studio’s Magoo and Jeff Lovejoy and the idea was to put a bunch of Brisbane songwriters together, pair them up and make them write a song and record it by the end of the day.

Well.. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it until Monday, but I’m certainly glad to have at least gotten one day in. I was paired with Guy Webster and we wrote and co-produced a track together before heading into record and produce it further. We were given the opportunity to work with Magoo; ARIA award winner for producing Regurgitator’s Unit, and most recently producer of albums by Kate Miller-Heidke and Operator Please. The result was awesome and I thank Tylea and Magoo so much for having a bunch of loud mouth (and at times drunk) musicians raid their property over the weekend!

I also recently returned from tour to Melbourne and I thank everyone who came to show their support at those gigs. Also, just before heading down, I had the brand new pressing of my release EPilation arrive. It’s a compilation of the two EP’s I have launched over the year and it looks amazing! – so many thanks go to Dane, Tarin and Ricks for putting it together for me. The Launch of EPilation will be taking place at The Troubadour (Brisbane) on the 25th of October. The release will be available to buy from this site very soon as well.

Next week is a busy one with a showcase spot in the Big Sound Music Conference on Wednesday night and then It’s off to Sydney to play the opening support for Kate Miller-Heidke at the Oxford Art Factory on Friday night.

Meanwhile, I am also working my little butt off completing the arrangements for my performance with Topology at the Powerhouse in November, so I am well and truly busy at the moment!

I look forward to seeing you at some future gigs!

Be Gone

My new single, Be Gone, is being released online this Friday. Freaky Friday 11.11.11. Best date of the year I think. It’s already had a little bit of love on radio so if you’ve heard it, I sure hope you’ve enjoyed it!
